What we collect, and why.
Last updated October 23, 2026.
Nell & Key makes math missions for children ages 6 to 14, built around what each child loves. A parent sets up and controls the account. This page says what that needs, why, who else sees it, how we may use anonymous results to make missions better if you say yes, and how to have everything erased.
What we collect, and why
- Your account: your email address and your passcode, so we know it is you and keep your child's Book to your family.
- Your child's profile: a first name or nickname, a grade, a few things they love, where math feels tricky and, if you write them, your goals for their learning, so each mission is made for them.
- Their missions: their answers, what they write or say about their thinking, the drawings and pages they make, so they can come back to their work, their tutor can read it, and the next mission starts where they are.
- Their voice, only if you turn listening on: you turn it on or off in your settings on the sign-in page, and while it is off your child types instead.
- The sign-up form: what you type in it, and your answer to the question below about making Nell & Key better, so Akshat can plan the first mission with you.
- If you give us your email after a try mission, we send your child's page to it and may write to you about Nell & Key. Every email has a link to forget your address.
- With a tutor: the class link and times, and the tutor's notes on your child's work. If your plan includes messages to their tutor, the notes you send from your Book and the tutor's answers, kept with your child's Book; no AI reads them.
- Basic technical facts a website needs to work, such as browser type and errors. No advertising and no tracking scripts.
Making Nell & Key better, only if you say yes
When you sign up you can tick one box. It is never ticked for you, and saying no changes nothing about your child's missions.
If you say yes, we combine anonymous results from many children, never fewer than three at once, so no one child can be picked out: which questions were right first time, and which explanation came just before. Sometimes two good ways of teaching the same idea are each given to some children, and we compare how they went.
You can change your answer any time on the sign-in page. We keep each answer with its date and the version of the words you saw.
Never sold, never used to train AI
We never sell your data or your child's. We never use your child's work, words or voice to train AI, ours or anyone's, and we have given no provider permission to. We run no advertising.
Who else sees it
A few services run Nell & Key for us. Each gets only what its job needs.
- Google Firebase: sign-in, and where accounts, Books, missions and drawings are stored. Its sign-in code loads from Google's servers.
- Vercel: hosts this site and the server behind it, so it carries the requests your browser makes.
- OpenAI: writes your child's missions from what you and their tutor have told us (their grade, what they love, where math feels tricky, your goals for them, a problem set you send) and how their last missions went, with their name taken out, except in a mission a person drafts from a sentence, which may use their first name. It also answers your child's question to a mission helper, from their words and the mission page. A mission reaches your child once our checks pass it or a person approves it.
- Microsoft Azure: turns the few seconds of speech your child holds the button for into words. We keep the words, not the recording.
- ElevenLabs: reads mission lines aloud in a companion's voice. It gets the line's text, which may include your child's first name, never their voice.
- Resend: sends our emails, such as your sign-in details and class links. If you turn on next adventure emails in your settings, it also sends you one short email when your child's next mission is ready, at most once a day at the hour you choose, with the subject, one line from the story and a link, never your child's name or work; to stop them, press unsubscribe in your email app or turn them off in your settings.
- Google Meet: live lessons with a tutor happen there.
- YouTube: if a mission includes a short video, it loads from YouTube's privacy-enhanced player only when your child presses Load video. YouTube then sees the device's internet address and browser type, not your child's work.
- jsDelivr, cdnjs and unpkg: send your child's browser the open code some interactive pieces run on. They see the device's internet address and browser type, not your child's work.
Payments
Nothing is charged on this site, and it collects no card or bank details. We agree the plan with you first and tell you how payment works before you pay. No part of your child's profile or work goes to a payment service.
Children
A parent or guardian creates and controls the account. Your child signs in with your family email and their own passcode, which we give you; they have no email of their own with us. We collect only what the missions need, and never use it to advertise to anyone.
How to erase it
Email info@nellandkey.com from your account's email address. We can send you a copy first. Then we erase your account, your child's profile, their Book, their missions and drawings, your sign-up form and your answers, and tell you when it is done.
Some services keep their own logs for a short time after; for example, our email service keeps sent mail for 30 days.
